Donika is one of our Albanian translation experts
Albanian is spoken primarily in Albania and Kosovo, but also in other areas of the Balkans. After obtaining a good honours degree in journalism, Donika became editor and contributed greatly to marketing and sales activities for an Albanian newspaper based in Tirana. After some years Donika moved to the UK to explore other options and is now settled here, editing, proofreading and undertaking a wealth of other key roles, including translating Albanian for the Home Office. When asked about her experiences in the UK, Donika could not be more positive about her experience here – she would not change her circumstances for the world! Donika’s favourite aspect is the fact that no two days are the same; “You wake up in the morning with one to-do list and by the end of the day you have completed tonnes of extra tasks - it’s so unpredictable!”.
Nearly six million people speak Albanian today, and not just in the countries of Albania and Kosovo
Albanian is the last surviving language of its type in the Indo-European category of languages. Its classification and relationship to other languages has been a topic of dispute for years. This is due to its obscure history and the fact that is it a descendent of the now-extinct Illyrian language. In the Albanian language, two main dialects can be found based on the geography of the countries it is spoken in. The north carries the Gheg dialect with the archaic Tosk in the south. While these are the main divergences of Albanian, there are several distinctive sub-varieties that are spoken today as well.
