Keeping your oceans blue

Industrial innovation sometimes comes at a price to the environment, and our business leaders don’t always get the credit they deserve for their efforts to balance engineering excellence with eco-friendliness.Take a bow, Torqueedo.

Starting in a garage in Lake Starnberg in 2004, founders Christoph Ballin and Friedrich Böbel built a business on the pioneering development of electric outboard motors.Today, a wide range of outboard and inboard motors and hybrid drive systems have made them market leaders. Torqeedo’s innovation isn’t confined to the motors themselves. TorqTrac enables Bluetooth communication between motor and smartphone, linking with Google Maps to give users a real-time view of how much power remains in the motor and how much further that will allow them to travel. Commercial success has been followed by well-deserved awards.

Torqeedo was named the most Eco-Friendly Marine Business of 2016 at last April’s China International Boat Show in Shanghai. And far from resting on their laurels, the company is showcasing a new generation of products right now at the London Boat Show. The core message of the show – and of the other global exhibitions that fuel the industry – is that sailing is challenging, accessible, sociable fun. And it’s a party we can enjoy without harming our host. Guidelines from the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) are an excellent source of information, reminding us of simple steps such as cutting down on packaging, re-using what we can when we can and making good use of recycling facilities. Torqeedo isn’t the only eco-champion in London this week.

Many other Boat Show exhibitors are making their own contribution to environmental protection. NRG Marine’s Sonihull system uses ultrasonic energy patterns to clean the craft of your hull in a way that is completely harmless to fish. And the solar technology that’s gathering pace on land also has its applications at sea.

Right now, representatives of Photonic Universe are making their case for the use of solar panels, charging kits and off-grid solar systems. They are proving what we know to be true. You can combine profitability, innovation and enjoyment with keeping your oceans blue.At Absolute Translations we strongly believe that a sustainable future is in everyone’s best interest, as our planet is something we have simply borrowed from generations to come.
