Azeri is a Turkic language that belongs to the Altaic language family. Before 1924, Azeri was written in Arabic script, but at that point the Soviet government adopted the Roman alphabet. In 1940, it was changed to the Cyrillic alphabet, which is the written form still used today. Azeri is the official language of Azerbaijan where it is spoken by around seven million people. Another 10 million native speakers of Azeri are found in north-western Iran and a quarter of a million speakers also reside in Iraq.
