LINGUISTIC FACTS

WHAT LANGUAGE DO PORTUGUESE PEOPLE SPEAK?

Native of Portugal are European Portuguese speakers. Mirandese is also spoken in the North East of the country in a small area called Terra de Miranda. Whilst Portuguese Sign Language is also used and is officially recognised by the Constitution of Portugal.

HOW OLD IS THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE?

Portuguese originated from Latin over 2,000 years ago.

The first written records of Portuguese date back to the 12th century. At this time, it was still called “Gallego” or “Galego” (derived from “Gallaeci”, meaning “the Celtic tribe”) by its speakers. The word finally became “galician” after the 13th century when Portugal became independent from Spain and established their own language as Galician-Portuguese (which later evolved into Modern Portuguese).

WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF THE PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE?

Portuguese is a Romance language that evolved from Galician-Portuguese or Old Portuguese, which is now two different languages: Galician and Portuguese.

Even though they are two separate languages, Galician and Portuguese are similar, with some speakers describing the difference between them as akin to the difference between American and British English.

HOW DID PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE DEVELOP?

The modern Portuguese language came about when King Alfonso X of Castile commissioned the translation of several works from Arabic into Castilian (the predecessor of modern Spanish). This translation project resulted in a new language called Castilian (modern Spanish), which was used as a common tongue for all of Spain’s kingdoms.

Portugal was one of these kingdoms until it gained independence in 1140 CE. At this point, it began developing its own language based on the Latin spoken by Roman Catholics during the time period when Portugal was still under Moorish rule. The new language became known as “Portuguese.”

IS PORTUGUESE AND BRAZILIAN THE SAME LANGUAGE?

When you think of the difference between European and Brazilian Portuguese, you might be tempted to think of it like the difference between American and British English—but that’s not quite right. In fact, there are many differences between the two languages that make them more distant than the two forms of English.

European Portuguese is closer to the language of Portugal than Brazilian Portuguese is. The two languages have remained relatively similar over time, but there are some important differences that make them almost unrecognizable to each other.

One of the biggest differences is in second-person pronouns—in European Portuguese tu and vós are commonly used, while these (especially the latter) are rarely heard in Brazil, which favours the pronouns você and vocês.

Although você is regarded as modern and less formal by many, it’s actually quite old-fashioned in Brazil—it’s a contracted version of the formal deferential greeting vossa mercê (“your mercy”). And much of the differences between these two languages relate to Brazilian Portuguese’s inclination to use terms from 18th- and 19th-century Portuguese.

WHAT COUNTRIES HAVE PORTUGUESE AS THEIR OFFICIAL LANGUAGE?

Portuguese is a Romance language that is spoken by about 250 million people around the world. It’s the official language of ten countries including Brazil, Mozambique, Angola, Portugal, Guinea-Bissau, East Timor, Equatorial Guinea, Macau, Cape Verde and São Tomé and Príncipe.

WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN SPANISH AND PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE?

Spanish and Portuguese are not mutually intelligible. They are totally separate languages and if you are wishing to communicate with a target audience in one of these languages finding a high quality translations service should be your priority.

WHAT OTHER LANGUAGES IS PORTUGUESE SIMILAR TO?

Portuguese is a Romance language, which means it shares many of the same roots and grammatical structures as other Romance languages.

It’s very similar to Spanish, Italian, French and Romanian and if you are holidaying there, you can often get by in those countries just with your knowledge of Portuguese.

WHICH LANGUAGE IS OLDER: SPANISH OR PORTUGUESE?

If you’re a history buff, you may have wondered about this question.

The answer is… both languages are extremely old.

In fact, Spanish and Portuguese are so old that they predate even Latin! They were spoken in Iberia as far back as the 6th century B.C., and they evolved from Latin over the course of many centuries.

But which one came first? Well, linguists don’t know for sure—but there’s a good chance it was Portuguese, because it was spoken by people who lived along the Atlantic coast of Europe from Portugal to Galicia (in Spain). And those people were called Lusitani after their homeland of Lusitania (now Portugal).

WHY IS BRAZIL’S LANGUAGE PORTUGUESE?

Centuries ago Brazil was colonised by people from Portugal so today they speak Brazilian Portuguese as their primary language.

WHAT LANGUAGE DID BRAZIL SPEAK BEFORE PORTUGUESE?

Tupian was the main language spoken by Brazil’s native people before European settlers.

HOW MANY WORDS IN PORTUGUESE LANGUAGE?

Portuguese currently has an estimated 356 000 words.
