We understand, for example, that the Caribbean-influenced dialect spoken in Cuba is different from the Paisa dialect used in the coffee-producing areas of Colombia. We know that Cubans tend to use informal modes of address and are highly unlikely to use usted – the formal second-person singular pronoun – when conversing with a stranger or superior, which in Cuba is regarded as pretentious and cold. Such finer details are vital in business, when first impressions can make the difference between a successful mutual working relationship and a communication breakdown. Conversely, Colombians are much more formal and demand a stricter formality in their expressions. The rather militaristic phrase ‘a la orden’, for instance  (‘at your command/service’), is widely used in Colombia but nowhere else.
