What is machine translation post-editing?

Machine translation and AI tools can produce a draft in seconds, but raw output is rarely ready to publish: it misreads context, mistranslates terminology and reads awkwardly to a native speaker. Post-editing is the human step that fixes this. A professional linguist reviews the machine-translated or AI-translated output against your source text, corrects the errors and refines the language so it reaches full, publishable standard, keeping much of the speed and cost saving of machine translation. We hold ISO 18587, the international standard for full human post-editing of machine translation output.

Translation shouldn’t create more work for you

  • Raw machine output that reads awkwardly and quietly drops your terminology
  • Not knowing whether AI output is good enough to send to a client or publish
  • Volumes and deadlines too large to translate everything from scratch

How our post-editing works

Post-editing is a defined, audited process, not an ad hoc cleanup. We start from your machine-translated or AI-translated draft and a professional linguist edits it against the source: correcting mistranslations and meaning errors, fixing grammar, spelling and punctuation, making terminology consistent, adjusting tone for the audience, and smoothing awkward phrasing, numbers, dates and formatting. We bring the content to full, publishable standard. This is a complete human post-edit, not a light edit for gist only. Because we hold ISO 18587, the international standard for full human post-editing of machine translation output, alongside ISO 17100, ISO 9001 and ISO 18841, the work follows a documented method with clear quality checks, and we confirm a fixed price before we start.

Content we post-edit

Post-editing suits content where a machine can do a strong first pass: high-volume documentation, repetitive or templated text, product and catalogue content, internal communications, knowledge-base and support articles, and material on a tight deadline or budget. We post-edit across legal, business, marketing, technical and website content. For highly creative, legal-critical or safety-critical material, full human translation is usually the better route, and we will tell you honestly when that is the case. If you already have machine output and are not sure it is good enough, send it to us and we will assess it before you commit.

Price and turnaround

Post-editing starts from £80 per 1,000 words plus VAT, with a £25 minimum charge for very small jobs. This is the same AI-Assisted rate shown on our pricing pages. The exact price depends on the quality of the machine output and the language, because poorer raw output takes more work to bring to publishable standard. Post-editing is usually faster and more affordable than translating from scratch, which is much of its appeal for high-volume content. Send us a sample of the machine output and tell us its purpose, and we will confirm a fixed price before you commit. See how our rates work on our pricing page.

Frequently Asked Questions

Post-editing is the process of taking a machine-translated or AI-translated draft and having a human linguist correct and refine it to full, publishable standard. The machine produces the first pass quickly; the linguist fixes the mistranslations, awkward phrasing, terminology and tone that software gets wrong. It gives you much of the speed and cost saving of machine translation while reaching a quality raw output cannot. Tell us your content and its purpose and we will advise whether post-editing is the right fit.

Post-editing starts from a machine-translated draft and brings it up to full, publishable standard, so it suits high-volume or fast-turnaround content where a machine did the first pass. Proofreading checks text that is already in its final language, whether written by a person or a machine, for grammar, spelling and consistency. If you have raw machine output, post-editing is usually the right call; if you have a near-final document, proofreading is. Unsure which you need? Send us the file and we will tell you.

Our post-editing is a full human post-edit to publishable standard, not a light edit for gist only. A professional linguist works through the whole text against the source, correcting meaning, terminology, grammar and tone so the result reads like a human translation. This follows ISO 18587, the international standard for full human post-editing of machine translation output. If your content only needs a final language check rather than editing of machine output, proofreading may be the better fit and we will tell you.

Post-editing starts from £80 per 1,000 words plus VAT, with a £25 minimum charge for very small jobs. The exact price depends on the quality of the machine output and the language, because poorer raw output takes more work to bring up to standard. Send us a sample and its purpose and we will confirm a fixed price before you commit. See our pricing page for how our rates work.

Yes. Machine translation quality varies a lot by language pair and subject, and even strong output carries errors that a person or a search engine will notice. A human post-editor catches the mistranslations, false friends and tone problems that raw machine translation and AI translation tools still produce, especially in specialised or culturally sensitive content. Send us your machine-translated or AI-translated files and we will bring them to full, publishable standard.
