It depends on the country and authority the document is going to, not the UK. Some overseas authorities want an officially recognised or sworn translation, and, separately, an apostille on the original where that country belongs to the Hague Apostille Convention. An apostille authenticates the original document, it does not replace the translation, and some authorities want both.
